GOOD TiMES iN NEW YORK

Well Hello Again...We have returned home after a glorious extended three week stay in Sterling Village, NY. I would have loved to keep a trip log but WI Fi was hard to find.

So here it all is crammed into one blog entry. You better set some time aside to read this. :)

We nestled our tent underneath a beautiful box elder, on this old farmstead. Each morning we were greeted by songbirds, and the energizing lake air.

Our days were spent, exploring the area around us and hanging out in the Barn, the community area for tenants of the farmstead. Built in the 60's as a dairy barn, it is a great place to spend rainy days and down time.

We had lots of fun making food, reading this, this and this, playing music, drinking wine from Bully Hill Vineyards, being creative (Violet constructed some awesome junk sculptures and I knitted, felted, and spun), and bird watching (the bird feeders that hung in the windows got a lot of traffic)

It was the Holiday Inn of campsites.

Our friend Leslie set up an old school desk and chair that she rescued from the abandoned farmhouse that was on the property for Violet. She felt right at home with her own little space.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TRIP AND SOME FAVORITE SPOTS:

1. LAKE ONTARiO

A most amazing place. The water is perfect for swimming, the shore is lined with the most beautiful stones, the sunsets are breathtaking
and the fireflies put on a fantastic show.

2. FLY BY NiGHT COOKiE COMPANY and MiNiATURE MUSEUM

MAGiCAL. This awesome lady Bonnie runs this out of her home. You walk up the steps of her house to the porch which is hand carved by her son,
past the elf shoes by the door, to the room where the miniature museum and cookies are located. It is all on the honor system. Bonnie is usually furiously making cookies in the kitchen. You pick out the ones want and put the money in the jar. Our favorites are the buckeyes, banana walnut, and Italian fig. YUM. We love to sit on her porch, eat our cookies, and enjoy her beautiful gardens.
Out Back is the Book Nook. All proceeds go towards the beautification of Fair Haven. We found a copy of Maurice Sendak's Pierre: A Cautionary Tale in Five Chapters and a Prologue and Marc Brown's Arthur's Baby (both authors we collect). Yahoo!!!

3. PORT CiTY CAFE AND BAKERY -OSWEGO

I love this place. They make the best iced coffee I have ever tasted, and have delicious food. It is owned
by this really neat lady. They have a healthy kids menu too!!

4. THE OSWEGO RIVER- downtown OSWEGO

Violet and Kalin caught a bunch of fish down here and I went up to the COFFEE CONNECTION to get an iced tea. Our friend Leslie, back at the Barn put
good use to the fish in a delicious Fisherman's Stew...word of the stew circulated and a bunch of of our peeps showed up for stew, a music jam, and
much to Violet's delightment, hula hooping.

5. THE COFFEE CONNECTiON -OSWEGO

This place was by the Oswego River where Kalin and Violet were fishing. They make delicious iced coffee with coffee ice cubes. The walls
are painted murals and upstairs has couches perfect for lounging, reading, sipping, and nibbling. I love the use of color in this place. It was
a great find.

6. THE OSWEGO FARMER"S MARKET thurs 5-8pm

I got to roam the street all by myself while Kalin and Violet were fishing. It was great fun. It is a huge market. I love buying local.
It just makes so much since. There isn't an expensive transport involved and you are supporting your local farmers. I filled my market bag with
fresh produce and a loaf of Amish Oatmeal Whole Wheat Bread.

6. RUDY'S

Located right on the beach of Lake Ontario, you can watch the sunset, take a dip, and dine on the variety of delicious foods they offer. Our favorites
are the fried haddock, fried zucchini, salt potatoes, and V loves the hot dogs.

7. STERLiNG CREEK

Kalin and Bob waded through a field of corn, head high grass, wildflowers, rose bushes, and a huge patch of poison ivy down to the creek on the farmstead.
Well worth the trip, they fished along the Sterling Creek amongst beaver dams, deer and many of the songbirds native to New York. They caught a stringer
full of sunnies and bass. A added bonus, was the muskie that Kalin caught. It proved to be a great adventure.

8. GiLLiS FAMiLY RESTERAUNT

Run totally by the Gillis Family, they have the best breakfast I have ever eaten. They offer homemade raisin, whole wheat, or home style white toast. A real treat.

9. NEW YORK GARAGE SALES

Garage sales in New York are like no other. I have found some of the coolest stuff in years past, so I was on the look out. We were on the way back to the barn, after a disappointing trip to the legendary barn sale in Fair Haven. The crotchety old man who owns the barn and the overwhelming smell of bat guano (bat poop) sort of ruined it for us. Anyway, like I said we were on our way home and passed a garage sale. This lady had her garage set up so cute and it was nice and clean. yeah!!! We did a quick U-ie and I ended up with some wicker doll furniture which Violet made sure Berry Sue and Mercy immediately put into use....and the a set of cutest little red baby bunt pans...for the low price of $1. Now that is what I am talking about. Wahoo!!!

10. INDIAN FOOD

Well apparently in addition to being a virtuoso of a flute player and composer, our friend Bob, is also a great cook. He whipped up several Indian dishes
while we were visiting which I totally dug. I snagged the recipe for Sag Panier from him to add to my repertoire. He also made a variation using a can of
chickpeas instead of the pannier. Yum!

11. STERLiNG RENAiSSANCE FAiRE

Ah Sterling...how I love you. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't get to spend time in one of the most fabulous places on the planet. The Hollow Earth
Swordworks Shoppe opened brimming with swords...ready to be snatched up by our loyal customers. It is one of the most authentic Faires I have attended. They have the best cast and musicians. It is truly a magical place. New Yorkers are very friendly, family oriented people, and come out in droves. They only have a few warm months out of the year, so nothing stops them...even pouring down rain.

12. iNCH BY iNCH WEAViNG SHOPPE

One of the booths at the Faire. Deborah, the lady who owns the shoppe is precious and gifted me with with some roving so that I could spin some up on my
drop spindle. She demonstrates weaving and spinning in her shoppe during the day.Violet and I like to take our breaks and watch her. I bought some
of her felted sheep and a shepherdess for Violet's good girl present, and added one of her beautiful woven dresses to my wish list.

13. AMERiCAN iN PARiS

Leslie had this treasure rented from netflix and we all watched it together one night. I have been trying to make my way through the classics, and was
delighted to find out that it was in her possession. What a great movie...Gene Kelly can really cut a rug and Oscar Lavant is a musical genius!!! FUN! FUN!!

14. BAGPIPES

Charlie, one of the tenants of the Barn, is a roaming musician from Taos, NM. He reminded me a lot of my uncle. He plays the guitar, fife, harmonica, flute, highland and the Ulleann pipes (Irish version of the bagpipes) We would get a concert from time to time when he was practising. He knows a lot of Irish, Celtic, and Scottish tunes, so that was fun. Liam, his English sheep dog was a darling. I might have to add that to my wish list along with the sheep.

15. MUD OVEN

Kalin and Violet made the cutest little oven made of clay, grass, and mud. Then they went berry picking and cooked up a delicious cobbler in the oven. What a fun project!!

16. ONTARiO ORCHARDS-
Within minutes of our camp this place has a variety of veggies and fruits from local farmers, baked goods, cheeses, and apples and cider made right on the premises.

17. POT LUCK MUSiC JAM

The peeps came over and brought their instruments. I forgot to bring any of Violets instruments with me. Oops. We filled a green tea can with a little rice and voila a shaker. Violet had a bang up time jamming with all of the musicians. They sounded great.

18. ViOLET'S FiRST SELF-PORTRAiT

Violet has really been getting into taking photographs...a lot of them turn out really good. This is her first self portrait.

19. FAERIE BOUQUETS

Violet and Kalin picked me a sweet little faerie bouquet composed of tiny little New York wildflowers. My favorite were the tiniest little snapdragons you have ever seen.

All in all it was a wonderful trip.....See you next summer New York!!

Are you still there? If you are you thanks for reading!!! Until next time.....

ON THE ROAD AGAiN

I am in the process of furiously packing for the New York show. Did I mention that my husband and his father and brother
make fine wooden swords that we market to Renaissance Faires and other sword enthusiasts? The Sterling Renaissance Festival
opens this weekend and we are headed up there set up. It is one of my personal favorite shows. Sterling is such a beautiful
area, not to mention the weather is considerably cooler...and they do not have nearly as many ticks as you find here in the
summer in the Ozarks. Having Lake Ontario about two minutes away is also a perk.

Yesterday morning it rained which foiled my gardening plans so I whipped together two new duffel bags for our trip. The idea came from a pattern that was given to my mother by one of her co-workers. I completed them from start to finish in a couple
of hours. They are super easy. I am going to make a bunch for the Wild Violets shop when I get home. You can also see the tupper (or what my mama calls an Arkansas suit case) in the background. They may not be pretty but they keep my clothes dry. :)

After all of my housework was done... I sat down to some British comedy, and this awesome band Femi Kuti lung tonic tea for on Austin City Limits...and made a sleepy time tea from spearmint, lemon balm, and lavender that I harvested and dried from my garden. I also blended up some mullen and pepermintKalin...Gratifying stuff...

In the midst of packing a Vi Bot landed in the house....with a little help from me and some robo-construction strips, she
refashioned Kalin's lantern box into a helmet...fun.

Until next time....
May the force be with you....

HAPPY FOURTH!!!!

We had a fun fourth. Lots of family, food , and fireworks. I made my old quickie standby pasta salad.

Here's the recipe:

1 box of elbow pasta (or whatever you have in the pantry)
1 carton of cherry, grape, or pear tomatoes
1 small block of fresh mozzarella cut in small cubes (or today I used a about 1/2 cup of Parmesan)
chopped herbs from the garden (rosemary, basil, oregano. thyme)
salt and pepper to taste

...you can also add a can of olives, or sun-dried tomatoes, or whatever you have in the fridge or pantry....

We also harvested some dragons langerie bush beans. They are so pretty and magically change a light yellow when cooked. They are so delicious!!!!!

Until next time!!!!

WEEKEND FUN

Kalin, Violet, and I had a most relaxing weekend...filled with soul feeding, hanging out, house building, cooking, and crafting. I kicked it off early on Thursday by attending my woman's meeting. Oh how I love them.

Friday was a gardening day. I got all of our tomato plants in the ground. FINALLY!! Violet turned out to be a big help. She hauled the tomato cages over while I dug the holes, filled them with amendments and planted them.

Later that evening...Kalin went cat fishing with the guys, and Violet and I played movie theater. It was great fun.

We woke up to a rainy snugly Saturday. Kalin arrived home from his fishing expedition loaded with catfish. The Arkansas River was abounding! The big daddy in the picture weighed in around 9 pounds!

After we got some cleaning under our belt, Violet decided that we needed a repeat performance of Friday night's feature, Snow Buddies. Kalin requested biscuits and gravy...so we consumed them while watching the movie.

The afternoon provided some crafting for us girls while Daddy took a nap. Then for dinner Violet helped me put together some yummy pizza pockets (which
unbeknown, to her were deceptively fortified with carrots. oh how I love pasta sauce and its many disguises)

Sunday we drove into nearby Mountain View, the folk music capital of the world :), to acquire a few much needed provisions. On the way home we went to the
Little Yellow House for some ice cream. We walked over to the park and watched some picking on the square. The band that was playing was good. Violet had fun dancing with her chocolate ice cream. The gardening association has really done a lot of improvements to the grounds of Pickers Park. It is now landscaped and has three new gazebos. What fun!!

.....Being on the square reminded me that I will be planted there in a few short months trying to peddle my wares at Bean Fest in September. I have got to get busy making stock!!!

That evening, Kalin layed a few more blocks for the basement. It is coming along slowly but surely.

What a wonderful weekend! Good thing...it is going to be a busy week, as we are preparing to leave for New York. We will be gone a little over two weeks. I have lots of gardening, packing and other preparations to complete before we leave....Also we are trying to cram all six weeks of the summer library program into three weeks, so that Violet can get her prizes. We are almost there.

Until next time. Thanks for reading!

GRAPE LEAF PiCKING

My inventive friend Laura and I took our kids grape leaf picking. She has tons of grapes that grow on the sides of her driveway.
It was a beautiful day in the Ozarks...kind of hot but with a cool breeze. The kids had fun adventuring while we picked the leaves. It was very satisfying work. My mind wandered to the thought that people all over the world have been doing this for centuries. What great fun!!

When we got back to Laura's house we canned the leaves in jars. We reserved a bunch to consume for dinner that night. Laura showed me how to make her families recipe for stuffed grape leaves. Her father, who is Lebanese would make them for the family. Boy are they tasty!!!
They are quite different than the dolmas that I have had before. They are stuffed with meat and rice. You could make them vegetarian also. Here is the recipe for those that are interested:

LAURA'S STUFFED GRAPE LEAVES

1 c uncooked rice
1 lb uncooked ground meat (beef, lamb, ground turkey)
1 onion minced
2-3 cloves garlic
handful of fresh parsley minced or 2 tsp dried
2-3 tbsp fresh mint leaves minced or 2 tsp dried
1/4 cup lemon
salt and pepper to taste
1 can of tomato paste (optional, we made some with and some without, both were tasty)
50-60 blanched grape leaves

Mix all ingredients in bowl. Place leaf shiny side down on work-surface. Place about 1-2 tbsp of the filling in the center of the leaf. Amount of
filling will vary depending on the size of the leaf. The filling will expand a little as it cooks. Fold the bottom of the leaf up, then the sides,
then continue to roll all the way up, kind of like you roll a burrito. Place in the bottom of a pot side by side in one direction for the first layer
and then the opposite direction for the second layer. Rotate directions for each layer until all leaves are rolled.
Fill pot with water until it is about 2 inches above the grape leaves. Place an oven proof plate inside of the pot to weight the rolls down and keep
them from unraveling. Cover. Bring to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer and Simmer until rice and meat are cooked...about 1 hour.

Enjoy! Have a wonderful day!!!

WATCHiNG THE WiLD ViOLETS GROW

Well this is my first blog entry. I have to thank my awesomely creative sister for introducing me to the wonderful world of blogs.
They add such a level of happiness and inspiration to my life. I have named my little blogspot Wild Violets after my fledgling
business...whose name is inspired from my four-year old daughter Violet. I am a stay at home mother. I enjoy sewing , knitting, drop spindling, organic gardening, cooking, and reading. I live on a farm in the Ozarks with my family
a few animals and my angora bunnies, Marmie and Pickwick.

Violet took the picture of me...I was pretty impressed...gotta give her credit

I thought to start things off I would include some pictures of a blissful day on the farm

We planted sweet bell pepper plants that I started from seed. With any luck they will grow up to be beautiful and delicious in various colors of
red, orange, yellow, purple, brown, and white. They were started from a multi pack so you never know what you are going to get until they ripen. I can't wait!!!!

Later that day, my husband, some friends and I worked on our house. It is quite the labor of love. I am really excited. It is going to be our cute little
cottage in the woods. Kalin built this pulley contraption to move the cinder blocks down into the basement hole. I have to say after many trips of manually
hauling the blocks...the pulley rocks. It has totally increased our production!!!

During this process Violet had a tea party with her babies and washed her doll clothes. I put together a washing set for her birthday and she loves it. I want to add a similar set to the Wild Violet site. I am working on making my ideas come to fruition!!!

Cheers everybody thanks for reading. Until next time!!
