MOTHER'S SEWiNG BOX

"A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid"
~ J.R.R. Tolkien

I spent the weekend with my Grandparents at their home in Texas. It was great fun.

Four generations of women under the same roof.

Sunday morning after breakfast, my Grandmother beckoned me into her room and revealed a box labeled "Mothers Sewing Supplies." I opened the box and inside was sewing notions that belonged to my grandmother, with it came memories. As I sat on the floor pulling the lovely things from inside the box she relayed stories of her family. Many of these tales I had never heard.

One of the many items in the box was a night gown and a tea towel, embroidered by my great-great grandmother, in Austria, before she sailed on a boat to Ellis Island. This was a truly remarkable story. I think that all to often it is easy forget about our our ancestry. and the courageous things they weathered. These experiences ultimately effect the life that we lead today. I am so honored to have the contents of such a special box in my possession...and the bit of family history that it revealed.
